Investment in State Roads and Information Superhighways

Many long-time Missourians can attest to the fact that for years our state’s roads and highways were in desperate need of an upgrade. An increasing number of drivers put a strain on the state’s infrastructure, without the necessary investment to ensure the quality and improvements that drivers deserved.

On countless occasions, we would hear friends in neighboring states describe how they could always tell when they crossed into Missouri while driving because of how terrible the roads and highways were compared to the state that they were from.

To the benefit of all drivers on our state’s roadways, Missouri has stepped-up and greatly improved its transportation infrastructure over the past few years – spending billions of dollars in the process.

Interestingly, a similar problem is currently being played out with our nation’s information superhighway: the Internet.

Michael Kleeman, a Senior Fellow at the University of California – San Diego and at The Annenberg Center for Communication at the University of Southern California, recently published an op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle highlighting these similarities and the changing utility of the internet for consumers, the need for increased investment in the network, and the need for a national broadband policy.

Kleeman’s piece can be found here.
